NoteBuilding

What I learned building my first AI agent

The first agent I built was not for business. It was built to help me remember who I am.

The short story

I was building things, thinking about my goals, thinking about the future, trying to stay focused.

But there was a problem.

Life gets busy.

You wake up with a clear picture of where you are going, what you want, who you want to become.

Then the day starts.

Messages.Work.Problems.Ideas.People.One thing after another.

And before you realise it, the whole day has gone.

You forgot to stop. You forgot to pray. You forgot to be grateful. You forgot about the vision you were carrying in the first place.

So I started asking myself:

How do I keep coming back to myself?

That question became the beginning of my first AI agent.

It was a very personal one.

I would wake up at 4:00 in the morning.

Then every three hours, the agent would remind me to stop.

7 AM.10 AM.1 PM.4 PM.7 PM.10 PM.

It was a small interruption in the middle of the day.

Five minutes.Sometimes ten.

I would sit down, pray, give thanks, breathe, and remind myself of my vision, my goals and who I was.

Then I would go back to whatever I was doing.

The whole point was not to escape the day. It was to stop getting lost in it.

every 3 hours

  1. 4:00 AMI wake up
  2. 7:00 AMpause
  3. 10:00 AMpause
  4. 1:00 PMpause
  5. 4:00 PMpause
  6. 7:00 PMpause
  7. 10:00 PMpause

stop. breathe. give thanks. return.

01

The problem

I did not build the agent because I wanted another productivity tool.

I built it because I knew something about myself.

I could wake up with a clear vision in the morning and completely lose touch with it by the afternoon.

Not because the vision had changed.

Because life had become louder.

Messages.Work.Problems.Ideas.People.One thing after another.

I needed something that could interrupt that noise.

Something that could say:

Stop for a moment.

02

The idea

The idea was simple.

I would wake up at 4:00 in the morning.

Then every three hours, the agent would reach out.

A reminder to pray.A reminder to give thanks.A reminder to breathe.A reminder to remember my vision and goals.

A reminder to return to the state I had chosen instead of simply reacting to whatever was happening around me.

It was not a complicated system.

But the reason behind it was important.

I did not want technology to make me busier. I wanted it to help me become more present.

03

What happened when it started reminding me

The interesting part was not the message itself.

It was what happened after I received it.

I could be in the middle of something.

Then the reminder would come.

And I would stop.

Five minutes.Sometimes ten.

I would sit quietly.Breathe.Give thanks.Think about what I was building.Think about where I was going.

And come back to the I AM state.

Then I would continue with the day.

The day had not changed. I had.

04

I started seeing AI differently

That was probably the biggest lesson.

I had been thinking about AI as something that could help me build things.

Websites.Tools.Automations.Agents.

But this showed me another possibility.

AI could also become part of a personal system.

Something designed around the way I actually live.

Something that supports a practice.

Something that helps me remember what matters when my attention gets pulled in a hundred different directions.

That was different.

And it made me much more interested in what AI could become.

05

The real lesson

I originally thought the interesting part would be building the agent.

It wasn't.

The interesting part was discovering the problem I was actually trying to solve.

I was not trying to build an impressive AI system.

I was trying to create a way to return.

Return to gratitude.Return to prayer.Return to my vision.Return to my goals.Return to who I believe I am.

The technology simply gave me a way to build that reminder into my day.

And that changed how I think about building.

Key lessons

  1. Build around a real problem. Not because something is technically interesting.
  2. Make technology serve you.Not the other way around.
  3. Small interruptions can matter.Five minutes can change the direction of a day.
  4. Do not automate everything.Sometimes the point of the system is simply to bring the human back.
  5. Know what you are trying to return to.Otherwise, you can become very efficient at going nowhere.

Final thought

My first AI agent did not make me more productive.

It did something I think was more important.

It helped me remember who I was.

Every few hours, it gave me a small interruption.

A chance to stop.Breathe.Give thanks.Pray.Remember the vision. And return to the I AM state.

That was the first time I really understood something about AI:

I don't just want to build things that do more. I want to build things that help people live better.

And that became a very different reason to keep building.
